Greek Orthodox Church in Ireland
Greek Orthodox Christians (Ecumenical Patriarchate) have been gathering as a community in Dublin since 1986. The first Greek Orthodox parish, the Church of the Annunciation, was officially organised under the Archdiocese of Thyateria and Great Britain in May 1998, originally celebrating the Divine Liturgy at St. Mary’s Street Dublin. Eventually, the Church of the Annunciation purchased a former church at 46 Arbor Hill, Stoneybatter, Dublin where it has thrived ever since.
By a vote of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2024, at the direction of His All Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch, the See was transferred from the Archdiocese of Thyateria and the Holy Orthodox Metropolis of Ireland (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and Exarchate of Celtic Sea was erected. On 18 May 2024, His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos was Enthroned as the Metropolitan, becoming the senior most canonically ordained, consecrated and enthroned Orthodox bishop on the island of Ireland. The Enthronement included the participation of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin and senior clergy from Christian churches in Ireland.
Since his enthronement, Metropolitan Iakovos and the Ecumenical Patriarchate have ordained several priests and deacons for service in Ireland. In 2025, the Metropolitan erected the parish Church of St. Nicholas in Cork and commissioned clergy to celebrate the Divine Liturgy at locations across Ireland where parishes are being planted to serve all Orthodox Christians and enquirers.
