Irish Council of Churches President, Rt Rev Sarah Groves has expressed her sorrow at the sudden death of Archbishop Noël Treanor in Brussels on 11th August.

She went on to say that “His death was a huge loss to universal Church as well as to the Catholic Church and to Europe as a whole. Whilst serving as Bishop of Down and Connor he had been greatly respected for his intellectual and linguistic abilities. His ability to cross boundaries has served to deepen Christian unity.  His gracious nature drew people to him in friendship. His generosity with his time and expertise was deeply appreciated by all at the Irish Council of Churches and the Irish Inter–Church meeting. He will be greatly missed.”

The General Secretary, Dr Damian Jackson represented ICC at his funeral service at St Peter’s Cathedral on 20th August.
